How to paint a miniature dragon

Malekith the Witch King

A green version of a dragon


If you prefer a green version of the dragon, here is an alternative way to paint it.

This dragon miniature actually is Malekith,the Witch King on Dragon and here is a green version of it.




















Citadel colours used:

(Old name/New name)


Dark Angel Green/Caliban Green
Thraka Green Wash/Biel-Tan Green Wash
Bestial Brown/Mournfang Brown
Snakebite Leather/Balor Brown
Bleached Bone/Ushabti Bone
Scorched Brown/Rhinox Hide
Goblin Green/Warboss Green
Liche Purple/Xereus Purple


Following the steps of how to paint Dragonfang,

Step 1

Clean & Assemble

  • Assemble and clean the model, fill gaps with green stuff

Step 2

Prime and add base colour


  • Spray with black undercoat and give a layer with Goblin Green/Warboss Green.





Step 3

Painting the scales

  • Give it a second layer with Goblin Green/Warboss Green.
  • Start painting scales with Dark Angel Green/Caliban Green


Step 4

Using a "shade"

  • Give the complete model a wash with Thraka Green Wash/Biel-Tan Green Wash

Step 5

Getting into the first layer

  • Paint first layer for horns, nails and other detail, I used Bestial Brown/Mournfang Brown for the horns and Bleached Bone/Ushabti Bone on the back
  • Inside of the mouth Dark Flesh/Doombull Brown

Step 6

Adding details to the bones

  • Put a layer Bleached Bone/Ushabti Bone on the horns
  • Paint the tongue with Liche Purple/Xereus Purple

Step 7

Drybrush

  • Drybrush the horns with Bestial Brown/Mountfang Brown and drybrush the backbones with Bleached Bones/Ushabti Bone, same for nails or teeth

Step 8

Working on the wings

  • Drybrush the horns with Scorched Brown/Rhinox Hide on the parts you wanna make darker
  • Paint the wings with Dark Angel Green/Caliban Green



Step 9

Adding the final details

  • Wash the wings with Thraka Green Wash/Biel-Tan Green Wash and finish some details here and there
  •  Paint the base Goblin Green/Warboss Green or whatever you wanna do with it

Step 10

Making the base

  • Spray the model with Satin Varnish to give it some protection
  • Add some grass with PVA glue
And yet another dragon done!
